Lexus most reliable – again

For the 8th year in a row Lexus has been named the most reliable car brand.
Porsche is the industry’s most reliable car

Lexus has been named the most dependable car brand in America for the eighth straight year. Its parent company – Toyota – nailed down the runner-up spot. Porsche was named the most dependable single vehicle in the industry.

Dependability is considered a key consideration for consumers looking to buy a new vehicle. Each year car manufacturers anticipate the release of the J D Power Vehicle Dependability Study. Now in its 30th year, the survey measures the number of problems experienced over the last 12 months, by the original owners of three-year-old vehicles.

J D Power asks owners of their experience regarding 177 specific problems. These are in turn grouped into eight major categories: Exterior, Interior, Seats, Engine/Transmission, Driving Experience, Audio/Navigation and Controls/Displays. The survey shows the number of problems per 100 vehicles and the rankings are based on the results. The lower the score, the higher the rating.

Power said that while vehicles are becoming more reliable, problems with voice-recognition systems, transmission shifts and battery failure have become common. No ratings were available for Tesla. It remains the only manufacturer refusing to co-operate with J D Power. All others provide information that allows the company to contact owners.

The Buick Verano is the most reliable compact car.

Surprises? The Corolla and Civic are widely believed to be the paragons of quality and reliability among compact cars. That might be the case regarding quality, J D Power does a separate survey for initial quality. But, when it comes to reliability, the Buick Verano took top honours in this latest survey with the Corolla in second and Chevrolet Cruze in third. The Civic? It has tumbled down the rankings, finishing below average in this latest survey.

Chevrolet did extremely well in this survey. Drivers who have had their Chevys for three years, reported fewer problems than folks who bought BMW, Audi, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru and Honda products.

At the age of five I was already obsessed with all things automotive being able to identify the make and model of car by just the sound of its engine going down the street in front of our house in the small town on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Although I have been covering and writing about the automotive scene for more than 40 years and the light still grows brightly.
